What Your Discharge Means
Roxanne Sabbag
Vaginal discharge is something every woman experiences. It’s not a problem to be fixed — it’s your body’s way of communicating. By paying attention to its changes, you can understand what’s normal, what’s cyclical, and when it might signal an imbalance.
The role of discharge
Discharge is a healthy fluid produced by the vagina and cervix. It helps keep the vaginal environment balanced and protected.
Clear or milky: usually normal, especially mid-cycle.
Egg-white texture: a sign of ovulation.
Thicker or creamier: often appears before or after periods.
Every woman’s baseline is slightly different. What matters most is recognizing your own patterns.
When discharge signals balance
Most of the time, discharge is a sign of a well-functioning ecosystem. A slightly acidic vaginal pH (between 3.8 and 4.5) keeps bacteria in check. The main bacteria, Lactobacillus, helps protect against infections by producing lactic acid.
When to pay attention
Changes in color, consistency, or smell can sometimes point to an imbalance:
Greyish or fishy-smelling: often linked to bacterial vaginosis (BV).
Thick, white, “cottage cheese” texture: may suggest a yeast infection.
Greenish or yellow: could indicate trichomoniasis or another infection.
Globally, BV is the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age, affecting 20–30% at any given time. Yeast infections are also common — around 75% of women will experience at least one in their lifetime.
Why tracking matters
Women often confuse one infection for another — for example, mistaking BV for thrush. Studies show that up to 50% of vaginal infections are misdiagnosed the first time[5]. This can delay effective treatment and prolong discomfort.
Keeping track of discharge patterns over time helps:
Spot early signs of imbalance before symptoms worsen.
Understand triggers (e.g., antibiotics, menstrual cycle, new partner).
Seek the right care faster, with more confidence.
Finding calm in clarity
Discharge is not something to be embarrassed about — it’s a vital sign of your health. By listening to it, you’re simply staying in tune with your body.
Santelle is here to make this easier: discreet monthly check-ins give you reassurance when things look normal, and guidance when something feels off.
